Danny Murphy explains Steve Bruce comments after criticism for questioning Sheffield Wednesday manager’s decision to take holiday
Danny Murphy has apologised for the comments he made about new Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce on Match of the Day over the weekend. The former Liverpool and Tottenham midfielder faced criticism on social media – including from Bruces son, Alex – after he and fellow pundit Ruud Gullit questioned the absence of the manager as the Owls lost the Chelsea in the FA Cup on Sunday.Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Bruce as their next boss on January 2, but announced he would not start his role until the start of the February. He is currently on holiday in the Caribbean, and was pictured watching the first Test between the West Indies and England last week, after a tough 2018 which saw Bruce lose both his mother and father, battle his own health issues and lose his job in charge of Aston Villa.Steve Bruce was pictured with England cricket head coach Trevor Bayliss and assistant Paul Farbrace in Barbados last week3

Murphy and Gullit appeared to criticise his decision to take a break instead of taking the job straight away, with assistant Steve Agnew taking charge of the Championship side for the time being.I think the big problem is he’s making a rod for his own back, Murphy said as a pundit for the BBC.He managed Sheffield United and now he said he would take this job.The club have to take some blame for allowing him to say ‘I’ll take it but not until then’.They facilitated that which is wrong. If he starts poorly do you think the Sheffield Wednesday fans are not going to bring this up?You’re sunning yourself watching the cricket for whatever reason. It’s not something any manager I’ve played under would have done.Steve Bruce is taking a break from football after a difficult 2018 for personal reasons3

Gullit then added: If it was Manchester United do you think he would have done the same?Former England Women international Alex Scott appeared to attempt to reason with her fellow pundits, saying: I’m just thinking about the year he’s had off the fieldBut she was cut off by Gullit who continued: No, no, no, no, no. If it was Man United in the same moment, would he then do the same thing?Their comments were widely panned on social media, with Alex Bruce taking to Twitter to explain just why his father had decided to take a short break from football. And, speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White on Tuesday, Murphy was keen to apologise for his comments.I have to hold my hands up because I gave an answer without knowing all the information, which is my fault, he said.I would never want to belittle anyones grief or stress, because Ive experienced that myself in losing my father. This isnt personal about Steve Bruce, I like Steve Bruce, Ive met him and hes a good guy.I actually told Fulham when they initially went down that if they want to get back up straight away, hes your man.Danny Murphy has apologised for his comments3

Let me make that clear, this is not a slant against Steve Bruces capabilities, hes a super manager and Sheffield Wednesday have done well to get him.The point I made, without having that knowledge, and I do still think and stand by it, is that the perception unfortunately with football supporters is if he comes in and doesnt start too well, because hes managed Sheffield United, it doesnt look great. We all say things sometimes and look back and think I wish I dealt with that differently, and I do. If its more a contractual thing in terms of what happened when he left Aston Villa, which I dont know the all the detailsabout, and he actually cant do it even if he wanted to, thats very different. Thats fair enough and I accept that. From a football perspective there are a lot of tragic events that have happened recently and its horrible, but football supporters love their team more than anything else in the world, and they just want everyone within that club to be as committed as they are.
